Instagram Accounts
Everytime you click on an account on your explore page it feels like the person has loads of followers and makes a great living off their account. With articles coming out saying that 57% of Gen Z want to be influencers, clearly people think it is a great living. Although this may be true, their are not many accounts with large followings, and the median wage for an influencer is closer to $45,000 dollars. The people on our explore page are there because they have large followings, and so we are fed their content since it is interacted with. This creates an effect called selection bias were we start to see everyone as having large followings because they are the ones pushed to us.
Below you will see a chart showing just how few accounts have large followings. If we make the cutoff at 50,000 followers for large following, then only 8.5% of accounts have greater than that. Percentage wise not a huge number. Then as a you get you to 100k+ followers the percentage is 5% of accounts. Considering there are 2.4 billion accounts of instagram you only need .004% of those accounts to follow you to get to 100k but yet only 5% can do that. The odds are not in your favor.
